Peonies, carved in red. This vintage cinnabar lacquer box has deep-cut peonies on the lid, set against a fine cross-hatched ground, with scrolling motifs wrapping the sides. The inside is lined in black lacquer, with room for rings, keepsakes, or a few small mementos. A small, richly textured piece for a vanity, desk, or bookshelf. Circa mid-20th century.
