BIEDERMEIER FURNITURE IDENTIFYING CHARACTERISTICS
MINIMALISM
These pieces were drastically different from their predecessors, with the main emphasis on utility and minimal ornamentation. Stoic, clean lines and clear-lacquered finishes made the Biedermeier chest one of the earliest forms of modern design.
WOOD SPECIES
These pieces were constructed of local materials such as ash, oak and cherry woods rather than the popular imported mahogany. These woods were then stained, completing the elegant and simplistic style.
SHAPES AND DESIGN
These timeless pieces are identifiable by signature, highlighted wood grains, and uncomplicated sophistication. There is an underlying harshness in the design of these pieces, as they have little ornamentation and minimal flair, leaving clean corners and strong lines.
